Silver Diamine Fluoride

Dental Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

A gentle, non-invasive way to slow or stop early tooth decay.

Silver Diamine Fluoride, commonly known as SDF, is a minimally invasive treatment used to slow or stop early tooth decay. It is especially helpful for young children, patients with dental anxiety, or individuals who may benefit from avoiding drilling when possible.

SDF is a liquid solution that is carefully applied to areas of active decay. It works by stopping the progression of bacteria and strengthening the remaining tooth structure. The treatment is quick, painless, and does not require anesthesia.

At Fremont Family Smiles, our doctors evaluate whether SDF is appropriate based on the size and location of the cavity, as well as the patient’s overall oral health needs. In some cases, SDF may be used as an interim solution before more definitive treatment is completed.

The American Dental Association recognizes Silver Diamine Fluoride as an evidence-based option for managing dental caries in certain clinical situations (ada.org). SDF has been widely studied and is supported by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as an effective option for arresting caries in children (aapd.org).

One important consideration is that SDF darkens the decayed area of the tooth where it is applied. This darkening indicates that the decay has been arrested. While this may not be ideal for highly visible front teeth, it can be very beneficial for posterior teeth or in situations where traditional restorative treatment may not be immediately possible.

Silver Diamine Fluoride is not a replacement for all restorative procedures, but it can be a valuable tool in managing early decay conservatively and comfortably.
