For some patients, dental visits can cause anxiety or nervousness. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedation option that helps patients feel more relaxed during treatment while remaining fully awake and responsive.

Nitrous oxide is administered through a small nasal mask that delivers a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The effects begin within minutes, creating a calm and comfortable sensation. Because the level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure, it allows for a personalized experience based on each patient’s needs.

At Fremont Family Smiles, our doctors use nitrous oxide to help patients feel at ease during both preventive and restorative treatments. Once the mask is removed and pure oxygen is administered, the effects wear off quickly. Most patients are able to resume normal activities shortly after their appointment.

The American Dental Association recognizes nitrous oxide as a safe and widely used method of minimal sedation in dentistry. It has been used for decades to support patient comfort during dental care (ada.org).

Nitrous oxide may be especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting for extended periods, or those undergoing longer procedures. It is designed to enhance comfort without putting the patient fully asleep.
