What Happens During a Dental Exam?

A step-by-step look at your checkup, from X-rays and the oral cancer screening to the cleaning itself.

If it has been a while since your last visit, walking into a dental exam and cleaning can feel a little uncertain. Knowing what to expect makes the appointment easier and helps you get the most from it. At Fremont Family Smiles, a routine checkup is a thorough but comfortable process that combines a careful diagnostic exam with a professional cleaning. Here is what typically happens, step by step.

1. Health history and a quick catch-up

We start by reviewing your medical and dental history, including any new medications, health changes, or concerns since your last visit. This matters more than people realize. Conditions like diabetes, pregnancy, and certain medications affect your gums and your mouth, and they shape the care we recommend. If you have had any pain, sensitivity, or bleeding, this is the time to mention it.

2. X-rays when they are needed

Dental X-rays let us see what the eye cannot, including decay between teeth, problems below the gumline, and the health of the bone that supports your teeth. We do not take them at every single visit. Instead, we take them at intervals appropriate to your needs and risk, using modern low-dose digital sensors. If you are a new patient, we will usually want a current set to establish a baseline.

3. The diagnostic exam

Dr. Anna Yi examines each tooth for cavities, cracks, and worn or failing fillings, and checks any existing crowns or other dental work. She also looks at how your teeth fit together, since an uneven bite can cause wear, sensitivity, and jaw discomfort. If you grind your teeth, the exam often reveals telltale wear patterns, which may lead to a conversation about a custom nightguard.

4. Gum health check

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. We gently measure the small spaces between your gums and teeth, called pockets, and note any bleeding or recession. Shallow, firm gums are a good sign, while deeper pockets and bleeding can point to gum disease. If we see early signs, we will explain them and your options. You can read more in our guide to the warning signs of gum disease.

5. Oral cancer screening

Every complete exam includes a quick visual and physical check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and neck for anything unusual. This screening takes only a couple of minutes and is one of the most valuable parts of the visit, because oral cancer is far easier to treat when found early. Learn what this involves in our overview of the oral cancer screening.

6. The professional cleaning

Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, including along the gumline and between teeth. This is followed by polishing to lift surface stains and, when appropriate, a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel. You will also get personalized tips on brushing and flossing for the areas you tend to miss.

7. Your summary and plan

At the end, we walk you through what we found and answer your questions. If everything looks healthy, we simply set your next visit. If we spotted something, we explain it in plain language along with your choices, whether that is a filling, a referral, or a closer eye at your next cleaning. We see patients from across Fremont and the wider Tri-City area, and we are happy to talk through cost and coverage on our financial offers page. FAQs

What is the difference between a dental exam and a cleaning?

The exam is the diagnostic part, where the dentist checks for cavities, gum disease, and other issues. The cleaning is when the hygienist removes plaque and tartar. A complete visit includes both.

Will I get X-rays at every visit?

Not usually. X-rays are taken at intervals appropriate to your needs and risk. New patients often need a current set to establish a baseline.

Does a dental exam include an oral cancer screening?

Yes. A complete exam includes a quick visual and physical check of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and neck, which only takes a couple of minutes.

How long does a dental exam and cleaning take?

A routine checkup and cleaning usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, though it can take longer for new patients or if more cleaning is needed.

Is a dental exam painful?

A routine exam and cleaning is generally comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or anxiety, let us know so we can keep you comfortable throughout.
